Comfort or courage, which will you choose for 2014?

Me and Charlie 1

What quote would you choose to describe 2013 in terms of your work and career?

For me it would be Brene Browns’ – “You can have courage or you can have comfort, but you can’t have both”

Sitting back and reflecting on the year I realise that for me 2013 has been a year characterised mainly by the ongoing feeling of ‘discomfort’. It has been a year of change and pushing forward and 2014 is not going to be any different.

No matter how much of part of me would like to retreat back into my ‘comfort zone’ another part is determined to push forward and continue to build on what has been started in 2013. Investment in a new website, investment in new technology, writing an e-book, building on relationships with new clients, and sourcing/developing new products and services.

It has all been about change and growth and the simple fact is that these two things don’t happen within our comfort zones, they don’t happen when we are ‘comfortable’, they don’t happen unless we make the decision to change.

So how are you feeling as we approach the end of 2013? Has it been a year of change and growth for you or is it time to find the courage to make the changes that matter in 2014?

We can all become a little complacent with our work and careers and to some extent assume or hope that everything will continue on in the same way. This is why I believe it is a useful practice to check in with yourself at least on a quarterly basis and ask yourself:

  • What is exciting and energising me at the moment?
  • What have I learnt that will move me forward?
  • How have I kept myself up to date?
  • What do I need to move forward with?
  • What investment will it need in terms of time, energy and or money?

Life is all about change and growth, running a business is all about change and growth and certainly your work and career will be exactly the same.
